Se transfiguró delante de ellos; y resplandeció su rostro como el sol, y sus vestidos fueron blancos como la luz (Mateo 17:2)
En los tiempos del Antiguo Israel, Dios se hacía presente entre su pueblo. La gloria de Dios se manifestaba en lugares concretos. Así, Dios se quiso hacer presente en el monte Sinaí y en el tabernáculo: “Y harán un santuario para mí, y habitaré en medio de ellos” (Éxodo 25:8) y la gloria del Señor llenó su casa (Ezequiel 43:5) La gloria es la manifestación visible del ser de Dios. Es su pura santidad presente entre su pueblo.
En 6 días creó el Señor el cielo y la tierra, los animales, plantas y finalmente, el hombre. Y al séptimo descansó. Y bendijo Dios el día séptimo y lo santificó (Gen 2:2). El séptimo día fue consagrado al Señor. Y seis días después, en el séptimo día, en su día, llamó Dios a Moisés a su monte, al Sinaí. Allí donde su gloria, reflejada en una profunda nube, reposaba. Moisés se adentró y pudo ver la gloria de Dios. El Señor lo llamaba para entregarle su Ley: su voluntad.
El aterrado pueblo de Israel tenía pánico de Dios. Dios descendió con fuego, truenos y sonidos de trompeta. Nadie puede ver a Dios y vivir. Dios es pura santidad. Y el hombre es pura maldad. El contraste destruye. Y Moisés, bajando del monte con las tablas de la Ley del Sinaí, estaba enseñando al pueblo su pecado, su suciedad y su incapacidad para amar a Dios. Por medio de la ley es el conocimiento del pecado, dice San Pablo (Romanos 3:20) Por las obras de la ley nadie podrá ser justificado porque en ti, en tu carne, no mora el bien, pues no haces el bien que quieres sino el mal que no quieres (Romanos 7) De manera que, en el Sinaí, Dios mostró dos cosas:
Él enseñó a Israel y te enseña a ti, hoy, que, mientras Él es el Santo de los santos, tú estás muerto en tus delitos y pecados. Eres hijo de desobediencia. Repasando los diez mandamientos, siempre hay alguno que incumples. No has amado a Dios con todo tu corazón ni a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. Has andado descarriado fuera de los senderos del Altísimo. Además, la sombra de la muerte aterra toda la creación. Hay sufrimiento y enfermedad. La tierra gime de dolores y está con dolores de parto.
Mas Dios no abandona a su pueblo. Él es fiel y justo y no quiere que nadie se pierda. El Señor no abandona a su heredad, nunca desistirá de su creación más amada: el hombre. Él creó al hombre a su imagen y semejanza para compartir su amor. Aunque el hombre le falló en Adán, el Señor no desiste de ti. Y por eso envió a su Hijo amado, engendrado desde la eternidad y nacido de mujer, para que todo aquel que en Él cree, no se pierda, mas tenga vida eterna. Él que no conoció pecado se hizo pecado para que tú puedas ser hecho justo delante de Dios en Él (2 Corintios 5:21)
Y este Hijo amado, su único Hijo, el Dios encarnado, seis días después, es decir, al séptimo día, el día de Dios, llamó a sus amigos, Pedro, Juan y Santiago al santo monte Tabor, en Galilea. Allí, en la cima de la montaña, mil años después, se volvería a ver la gloria de Dios.
Allí la gloria de Dios se manifestaba en Cristo Jesús. Pedro, Juan y Santiago pudieron ver la naturaleza divina de Jesús. Su rostro resplandecía como el Sol y sus vestiduras se tornaron blancas como la nieve. Jesús es la luz del mundo, el que le sigue no anda en tinieblas. Dios es luz. Y ellos lo vieron. Ellos siguieron la luz. Su rostro brillante como el sol manifestaba su divinidad. Si en el rostro de Moisés brillaba la gloria de Dios y nadie se atrevía a mirarlo a la cara, ahora en el rostro de Jesús brillaba la misma gloria de Dios saliendo de sí mismo, y ahora todos lo pueden ver. A Dios nadie le vio jamás, sino el unigénito Hijo, que está en el seno del Padre, Él le ha dado a conocer (Juan 1:18) Cristo es el resplandor de su gloria y la imagen exacta de su sustancia (Hebreos 1:3) Cuando ves a Cristo, ves a Dios. Y puedes verlo sin miedo porque Jesucristo hizo hombre como tú y te toma de la mano.
Encima del monte, surgen Moisés, apareciendo desde el Hades y Elías, descendiendo desde los cielos, la Ley y los profetas, apuntando a Jesús. Los judíos esperaban ansiosos el retorno tanto de Moisés como de Elías al final de los tiempos. Los días postreros estaban llegando ya. Ambos, tanto Moisés como Elías, recibieron la palabra de Dios en el mismo monte: en el Sinaí. Ahora, en otro monte, estaba cumpliéndose lo que ellos prometieron. El Mesías había venido.
Pedro, Juan y Santiago, atónitos, felices y exultantes, claman: ¡qué bien que estamos aquí! Hagamos tres tabernáculos, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías. En ese instante, en ese monte, no hay dolor, ni enfermedad, ni muerte, hay paz, la paz de Dios. La plenitud del Reino de Dios se hallaba allí. Los amigos no quieren retornar al mundo. Quieren permanecer en medio de la gloria de Dios. Estaban experimentando lo que tú experimentarás cuando los nuevos cielos y la nueva tierra se unan, donde Dios enjugará toda lágrima de tus ojos.
Estando así, la nube de luz los cubrió, mientras que, tronando desde ella, una voz clama diciendo: Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien me complazco. A Él oídle.
El Padre que me envió, Él mismo ha dado testimonio de mi (Juan 5:36). El que oye a Jesús, tiene palabra de vida eterna. Una intensa nube, como en el Sinaí, comienza a cubrir el monte. El Padre se hace presente.
Los apóstoles se lanzan al suelo de miedo. Su naturaleza pecaminosa aprieta. Sus pecados le alejan de Dios. Tropiezan y caen. ¿Qué hace Jesús? Se acerca a ellos y les toca. Con amor y bondad, les dice: levantaos, no tengáis miedo.
No temas, porque yo estoy contigo; no desmayes, porque yo soy tu Dios que te esfuerzo; siempre te ayudaré, siempre te sustentaré con la diestra de mi justicia. (Isaías 1:10) La diestra de Dios, Jesucristo, te sustenta. Te caes, pero te levanta. No te deja atrás. Aunque andes en valle de sombra de muerte no tienes miedo porque sientes la preciosa mano de Jesús sustentándote. Él te lleva en sus hombros como oveja perdida. Él es el buen pastor que da su vida por ti. Él es que da testimonio a tu Espíritu de que eres hijo de Dios.
En el monte Tabor los apóstoles vieron la gloria de Dios manifestándose en Cristo y disfrutaron del anticipo de la nueva Jerusalén.
En la comunión de los santos, en la predicación de la Palabra, en la Eucaristía, en el amor de unos con los otros, aquí, en medio de nosotros, experimentas la bondad del Reino. La gloria de Dios llena tu corazón como templo del Espíritu Santo. No temas. Solo confía y camina.
He aquí la gloria de Dios en Cristo: míralo, confía en Él y síguelo. Él es la luz que nunca falla, el Pastor que nunca te abandonará, y el Hijo por medio del cual eres hecho hijo de Dios para siempre.”
Que la gracia del Señor Jesucristo, el amor de Dios y la comunión del Espíritu Santo estén con todos vosotros.

He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. (Matthew 17:2 NKJV)
In the times of ancient Israel, God made His presence known among His people. The glory of God appeared in specific places. God chose to be present on Mount Sinai and in the tabernacle:
“And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.” (Exodus 25:8 NKJV)
And the glory of the Lord filled His house. (Ezekiel 43:5 NKJV)
Glory is the visible manifestation of God’s being. It is His pure holiness present among His people.
In six days the Lord created the heavens and the earth, the animals, plants, and finally man. On the seventh day, God rested. And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it. (Genesis 2:2 NKJV)
The seventh day was consecrated to the Lord. Six days later, on the seventh day, God called Moses to His mountain, Sinai, where His glory rested in a deep cloud. Moses entered and could see the glory of God. The Lord called him to deliver His Law: His will.
The terrified people of Israel were afraid of God. God descended with fire, thunder, and the sound of a trumpet. No one can see God and live. God is pure holiness, and humans are full of sin. The contrast destroys. Moses, coming down the mountain with the tablets of the Law, was showing the people their sin, their impurity, and their inability to love God. Through the law, sin is revealed. (Romans 3:20 NKJV)
By the works of the law, no one can be justified, because in your flesh no good dwells. You do not do the good you want, but the evil you do not want. (Romans 7 NKJV)
At Sinai, God showed two things:
- He taught Israel and He teaches you today that while He is holy, we are dead in our sins. We are children of disobedience. Reviewing the Ten Commandments, we always break some of them. We have not loved God with all our heart, nor our neighbor as ourselves. We have wandered from the paths of the Most High.
- The shadow of death terrifies creation. There is suffering and disease.
But God does not abandon His people. He is faithful and just. He does not want anyone to be lost. The Lord does not forsake His inheritance and will never give up on His most beloved creation: man. He created man in His image and likeness to share His love. Though man failed in Adam, the Lord does not give up on you. That is why He sent His beloved Son, born of eternity and of a woman, so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. He who knew no sin became sin, so that you might become righteous before God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV)
This beloved Son, the only Son, the incarnate God, six days later—on the seventh day, God’s day—called His friends, Peter, John, and James, to the holy Mount Tabor in Galilee. There, at the top of the mountain, a thousand years later, God’s glory would be seen again.
The glory of God was revealed in Christ Jesus. Peter, John, and James could see Jesus’ divine nature. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as snow. Jesus is the light of the world; whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness. God is light and they saw Him. They followed the light. His face shining like the sun manifested His divinity. If the glory of God shone on Moses and no one dared look, now in Jesus’ face the same glory came from Himself—and now everyone can see it.
No one has ever seen God, but the only begotten Son, who is in the Father’s bosom, He has declared Him. (John 1:18 NKJV) Christ is the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person. (Hebrews 1:3 NKJV) When you see Christ, you see God—and you can see Him without fear, because Jesus became man like you and takes your hand.
On the mountain appeared Moses, coming from the dead, and Elijah, descending from heaven, the Law and the prophets, pointing to Jesus. The Jews eagerly awaited the return of both Moses and Elijah at the end of times. Now, on another mountain, what they promised was fulfilled. The Messiah had come.
Peter, John, and James, amazed and joyful, exclaimed: “It is good for us to be here!” Let us make three tabernacles, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. In that instant, there was no pain, disease, or death. There was peace—the peace of God. The fullness of God’s Kingdom was there. The disciples did not want to return to the world. They were experiencing what you will experience when the new heavens and new earth come, and God wipes every tear from your eyes.
A cloud of light covered them, and a voice thundered: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” The Father who sent Me has Himself testified of Me. (John 5:36 NKJV) Whoever hears Jesus has the word of eternal life.
The apostles fell to the ground in fear. Their sinful nature weighed them down. Their sins separated them from God. They stumbled and fell. But Jesus came to them, touched them, and said with love and kindness:
“Arise, do not be afraid.”
“Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10 NKJV)
The right hand of God, Jesus Christ, sustains you. You fall, but He lifts you up. He does not leave you behind. Even in the valley of the shadow of death, you need not fear, for you feel the precious hand of Jesus supporting you. He carries you like a lost sheep. He is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for you.
On Mount Tabor, the apostles saw the glory of God revealed in Christ and caught a glimpse of the new Jerusalem. In the communion of saints, in preaching the Word, in the Eucharist, in love for one another, even here among us, you experience the goodness of God’s Kingdom. The glory of God fills your heart as the temple of the Holy Spirit. Do not fear. Only trust and walk.
Behold the glory of God in Christ, see Him, trust Him, and follow Him. He is the light that will never fail, the Shepherd who will never abandon you, and the Son through whom you are made a child of God forever.”
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
